The Oklahoma City Zoo covers 110 acres with more than 2,000 animals representing 500 species; expansive hoofstock collection; naturalistic island life exhibit; walk-through aviaries; herpetarium; pachyderm building; big cat exhibit; primate and gorilla exhibit; children's zoo with discovery area; even a Safari Tram. The Zoo is proud of their memebership in the American Zoo and Aquarium Association and the American Association of Museums. They're listed as both a living museum and a botanical garden. OKC Zoo participates in numerous cooperative Species Survival Plan projects and is dedicated to the conservation of rare and endangered wildlife. And that's good for all of us. The Best of OKC
From the official Oklahoma City Zoo vision statement: "The Oklahoma City Zoological Park and Botanical Garden will be one of the world’s premier zoological institutions, providing visitors and the community with exemplary recreational and educational opportunities. "Here's the Zoo's official mission statement: "The Oklahoma City Zoological Park and Botanical Garden shall contribute to an understanding and preservation of the earth's natural resources through positive recreational and educational experiences. The Zoo will also conduct and participate in scientifically based conservation programs that benefit animal and plant communities, both at the Zoo and in nature. "The Zoo shall provide the following to support and implement its Vision and Mission Statements: "A diverse animal and plant collection exhibited under naturalistic conditions. "An environment where visitors may enjoy a recreational experience that is compatible with the Zoo's mission. "Educational opportunities that reflect current information about the natural world and its diversity. "Opportunities for zoological research that will contribute to the husbandry, conservation and overall well being of all animal and plant communities. "Resources for the development of staff and volunteers to assure program potential and growth in performance excellence. "A sound foundation of fiscal and organizational controls that preserve the community's trust and support. OKC's Endangered Mammal ProgramsMammals: One of only 20 zoos in North America to exhibit okapi. One of only 10 zoos to exhibit babirusa. (We've got 4 of the 40 in all of North America). Only zoo in Oklahoma to house Western lowland gorillas. One of 20 zoos, with only 54 animals in North America, to manage the Indian rhinoceros. Most diverse collection of cats, both large and small, in the region. One of three zoos to exhibit the Somalia wild ass, with only 14 total animals in the United States. The OKC Zoo is one of 11 in the United States to exhibit the Pere David's deer, extinct in the wild. One of 11 zoos to house the Mhorr's gazelle, which is considered extinct in the wild.
